Creative Diary

I will be doing a 4-5 minute short film focused on developing a single character. The film will follow me or a stand in for me (haven't decided yet) on my journey to school. It will be largely focused on cinematography, lighting and editing (to create interesting visual techniques). I will not be putting a lot of focus on performance or mis en scene (with the exception of the colour yellow to signify attention). The focus is divided in this way to centre the project on mimicking my experience with ADD. The sound will also play an important role. I intend to create a contrast between what I see vs what everyone else sees, to emphasise this I will use upbeat music in a pair with the ADD focused scenes.

To develop the short I will need some help. I plan to recruit some friends to help me shoot, as well as sourcing a camera and some yellow props. I plan to use this to create a rough draft of what I want to actually put out, giving me an idea of any changes I'll need to make. The main feature I'm hoping to create would be a sort of dream sequence, or a daydream sequence as I see it (somewhat similar to the dream sequence from The Big Lebowski).

To start my film I will show snippets of my morning routine strung together using editing techniques. These clips will be used mainly to set the tone, I will just be showing an average commute. Creating this image of normality is important as I intend to break that image once I introduce the main feature of my film, the dream/hallucination scene (the point is to showcase ADD but it should be said I don't hallucinate, just do a lot of daydreaming). This will come suddenly as a direct contrast to what I have previously set up, here I will make use of colour and lighting. Opposing the dull repetitiveness of my commute I will flash a lot of the colour yellow and use a brighter filter on the scenes. In the actual sequence itself, I'm not entirely sure what I want to go into it. I intend to have somebody dancing on the train as the way into the scene as this will be very out of place. Once this has happened there are a lot of different ways it can go that I still need to explore. But the point of this is to link it back to my final scene. I'm hoping to find a yellow bird and have it fly around a classroom (or a room that looks like a classroom) and then make use of a close up to show my attention shift from work to the bird.

I plan to shoot in my home, a few different locations on my commute to school, a classroom in school and maybe a few other unestablished locations depending on what I want to shoot. I need to acquire some props (all yellow) a dress and maybe some other clothes, a bird some random items I can scatter about etc.

Next week I plan to have the beginning of my short film complete, my journey up until the dream sequence. I will show this along with this creative diary and maybe a map of my plans or a mood board.
