What Is The Goal Of The Protagonist?
We meet the protagonist, Richard, alone in a bathtub slowly bleeding out. This is the Equilibrium. The goal for this scene seems to be death or at least some sort of escape from his current state of mind/quality of life. That goal of escape is further reinforced when we find out Richard is a drug user.
While suicide is Richard's original goal his goal evolves into a general sense of happiness, not just an escape. This happiness is found in the form of his niece Sophia who he previously has been banned from seeing. The introduction of his niece disrupts the Equilibrium and gives the protagonist a chance at real happiness, helping his sister by taking care of his niece becomes the true goal. Throughout the course of their night we can see Richard make attempts at reconnecting with Sophia however this is where we begin to see some of the obstacles between them.
What Obstacles Do They Face?
As soon as Sophia meets Richard for the first time we can already see what she thinks of him through her attitude towards him. Sophia talks to her uncle in a condescending way, treating him like a child which is ironic considering the circumstances. It is from this we can find the first obstacle, Richard's sister. Even though they haven't seen each other for a while Richard's sister still has preconceived notions about who he is, disregarding his ability to change and consequently giving him a list of things he is "allowed" to do. She looks at Richard as irresponsible. She relays this impression of her brother onto Sophia who now has a distrust towards Richard because of it. Richard's first challenge is to prove himself to Sophia. Richard does this by ignoring the list and showing Sophia a part of himself he thinks she'd like, his old sketch books. They make their way to Richard's old apartment. At first Sophia is scared by the environment and thinks Richard is going to buy drugs but is pleasantly surprised by the sketch books Richard recovers. Sophia sees more in Richard and the two begin to connect. Richard has passed his first obstacle.
