What Is The Goal Of The Protagonist?   We meet the protagonist, Richard, alone in a bathtub slowly bleeding out. This is the Equilibrium. The goal for this scene seems to be death or at least some sort of escape from his current state of mind/quality of life. That goal of escape is further reinforced when we find out  Richard is a drug user.  While suicide is Richard's original goal his goal evolves into a general sense of happiness, not just an escape. This happiness is found in the form of his niece Sophia who he previously has been banned from seeing. The introduction of his niece disrupts the Equilibrium and gives the protagonist a chance at real happiness, helping his sister by taking care of his niece becomes the true goal. Throughout the course of their night we can see Richard make attempts at reconnecting with Sophia however this is where we begin to see some of the obstacles between them.
